Location
Living in Sinhagad Road
Sinhagad Road is a major arterial corridor and residential belt in south-west Pune, Maharashtra, running from near Saras Baug/Swargate through Dattawadi, Vadgaon Budruk, Hingne and Vitthalwadi towards Sinhagad Fort. It falls under Pune Municipal Corporation's dedicated Sinhagad Road ward and is locally also called Tanaji Malusare Path.
Over two decades it has grown into a mid-income, largely apartment-led residential hub anchored by large townships such as Nanded City, alongside schools, hospitals, engineering colleges, neighbourhood malls and multiplexes. It runs near the Mutha River and Khadakwasla Dam and connects to NH48 (Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway); its northern end adjoins Swargate, Pune's metro and inter-city bus interchange.
- Direct arterial road from Swargate (Pune Metro Purple Line terminus and MSRTC/PMPML bus hub) through Dattawadi and Vadgaon Budruk to Sinhagad Fort, giving quick access to central Pune.
- Relatively affordable housing versus central and western Pune, with portal-tracked average sale prices of roughly Rs 6,250-7,360 per sq ft.
- Established social infrastructure along the stretch: schools (DSK School, Chandrashekhar Agashe High School), engineering colleges (Sinhgad College of Engineering, SKNCOE) and hospitals (Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Shree Hospital).
- Weekend access to Sinhagad Fort (about 7 km away) for trekking and picnics, plus proximity to Khadakwasla Dam's backwaters and more open surroundings than denser central Pune.
- An approved underground Metro extension from Swargate to Katraj (5.46 km, targeted around 2029) is planned to bring rail transit closer to the corridor's northern stretch.
- Recurring monsoon flooding: low-lying pockets such as Ekta Nagari, Hingne and Vitthalwadi sit within the Mutha River's 'blue flood line' and are inundated most years when Khadakwasla Dam releases water.
- Peak-hour traffic congestion on narrower stretches is a frequently cited resident complaint, prompting PMC plans for a new bridge parallel to Rajaram Bridge.
- PMC has had to seek a large capital outlay (a proposed roughly Rs 300 crore riverfront/flood-wall package) to flood-proof and relocate at-risk flats and shops near the river.
- Rail-based transit is still indirect: the corridor relies on the Swargate interchange, while the underground extension toward Katraj remains under construction, targeted for around 2029.
Sinhagad Road runs from near Saras Baug/Swargate to Sinhagad Fort, threading Dattawadi, Vadgaon Budruk, Hingne and Vitthalwadi. It connects to the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway (NH48) and is served by PMPML buses plus autos/cabs.
Its northern end adjoins Swargate, terminus of Pune Metro's Purple Line (PCMC-Swargate) and a multimodal MSRTC/PMPML bus hub. Pune Junction railway station is about 15 km away and Pune International Airport about 29.6 km, both via Sinhagad Road.
An approved underground extension (Swargate-Katraj) is planned to bring Metro access further into the area.
The corridor hosts a cluster of professional colleges, including Sinhgad College of Engineering and Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Engineering in Vadgaon Budruk, plus NSB College, Wings College of Aviation & Technology and Sinhgad College of Education.
Schooling options include DSK School, Chandrashekhar Agashe High School, Chaitanya Convent School, City World School and several preschools (Kidzee, Global Star Day Care, Happy Feet), giving families a fairly wide choice of schools without leaving the corridor.
Sinhagad Road is predominantly residential and retail rather than an industrial belt, with no major manufacturing cluster directly on the corridor.
It hosts a few office/IT parks along its length, such as Symphony IT Park and Teerth Technospace, and sits within commuting distance of Pune's larger IT hubs in Hinjewadi, Baner and Aundh via NH48 and the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, which supply much of the area's white-collar rental and buyer demand.
The corridor's namesake and chief draw is Sinhagad Fort, a 17th-century hill fortress associated with the 1670 Battle of Sinhagad and Maratha general Tanaji Malusare; it is roughly 28 km southwest of central Pune but only about 7 km from the built-up Sinhagad Road locality itself. En route lie Khadakwasla Dam on the Mutha River, a popular lake and picnic spot, and Saras Baug, a well-known garden and Ganesh temple near the road's northern end.
Tung Fort is also reachable further along the same corridor.
Multiplex options directly on the corridor include City Pride Multiplex, Mangala Multiplex and Fun Time Multiplex, along with a Dadasaheb Phalke 4D theatre. Neighbourhood shopping is served by malls such as Abhiruchi Mall & Multiplex and Santosh Mall, plus numerous restaurants and cafes along the main stretch.
Larger destination malls and multiplexes elsewhere in Pune are reachable but require travel off the corridor.
Physical infrastructure includes the Rajaram Bridge over the Mutha River, with PMC planning a parallel bridge to ease congestion, and a flyover along the Rajaram Bridge-Fun Time stretch. PMC's FY2026-27 draft budget earmarked roughly Rs 954 crore for civic works (roads, sewage, water supply) in merged villages, several along this belt, and water supply benefits from proximity to Khadakwasla Dam.
A recurring concern is monsoon flooding in blue-flood-line pockets, prompting a proposed roughly Rs 300 crore PMC riverfront and rehabilitation package.
