Akurdi has its own station on the Pune Suburban Railway, served by Pune Junction/Shivajinagar-Lonavala and Talegaon local trains. It sits on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway, with onward access to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway toward Mumbai.

A Pune Metro Purple Line station at Akurdi is under construction as part of the PCMC-Nigdi extension, alongside new stations at Chinchwad and Nigdi; PCMC Bhavan is currently the nearest operating metro terminus. Local buses and autos supplement road transport.

Akurdi hosts the D Y Patil College of Engineering campus in Sector 29, Nigdi Pradhikaran - an AICTE-approved, Savitribai Phule Pune University-affiliated college operating from this site since 2001, granted autonomous status from 2024-25.

Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, in adjoining Nigdi, is within walking distance of Akurdi railway station.

Akurdi's industrial identity traces to Bajaj Auto, whose original two-wheeler plant and registered office were established here. Business Standard reported that vehicle production at the 200-acre Akurdi plant was wound down from September 2007 amid disputes over state tax policy, though component production and other corporate functions continued.

Akurdi was one of the original industrial-residential areas, with Pimpri, Chinchwad and Bhosari, unified under the Pimpri-Chinchwad civic body in 1970.

Akurdi is primarily residential and industrial rather than a tourist destination.

It functions more as a base than a destination: the hill town of Lonavla is roughly 49 km away, and the wider Pune-Pimpri-Chinchwad region's temples, pilgrimage towns and forts lie within a day's reach by road or rail.

Akurdi is administered by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) rather than Pune Municipal Corporation. Per PCMC's official site, it has its own divisional/ward office (Assistant Zonal Office at Babasaheb Ambedkar Cultural Hall, Akurdi) handling local property-tax and civic functions, within PCMC's Zone A.

PCMC divides the city into 8 administrative zones (A-H) and 32 electoral wards, and delivers roads, water supply, drainage and solid-waste services; residents can log civic complaints via PCMC's helpline and Sarathi portal.
