Baner lies on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway (NH48) in western Pune, linked to Aundh, Wakad, Pashan and Hinjewadi via Baner Road, Pashan-Sus Road and the Baner-Pashan Link Road, with PMPML buses serving the area. Pune Metro Line 3 (Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar), being built by PMRDA with stations planned at Baner and Baner Gaon, was reported 94.6% physically complete as of January 2026; the Baner ramp of the University Chowk double-decker flyover opened to traffic in March 2026.

Pune Junction and the airport are roughly 30-45 minute drives depending on traffic.

Baner has a dense cluster of K-12 schools within about 2 km, including The Orchid School, CM International School, Vibgyor High International School and Lokseva E-School & Junior College, plus several preschools.

It borders Savitribai Phule Pune University to its east, and portal listings place IISER Pune, Spicer Adventist University, Moze College and Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya within a few kilometres.

Once known for agriculture, Baner has since the mid-2000s grown into a commercial extension of Pune's IT corridor, hosting business/office parks such as Panchshil Business Park, Prabhavee Tech Park, Nanospace IT Park, Seasons Business Square and RMZ Westend within a few kilometres, alongside numerous IT/ITeS, real estate and services firms.

Its adjacency to Hinjewadi's IT park (about 8.6 km) reinforces steady office and rental demand from IT/ITeS professionals.

Baner is primarily a residential-commercial locality rather than a tourist destination. Its main draws are the Baner-Pashan Biodiversity Park and Baner Hill - Pune's third-highest point - offering nature trails, birdwatching and a hilltop Tukai Mata temple, plus the centrally located Bhairavnath Temple around which Navratri and Urus festivals are celebrated.

Pune's wider heritage sites lie further into the city.

The Baner-Balewadi belt is a well-known social hub, anchored by Balewadi High Street's restaurants, cafes and pubs. Nearby is the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex (Balewadi Stadium), which hosted the 1994 National Games, 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games and 2019 Khelo India Youth Games.

Primrose Mall sits within Baner, while Westend Mall's Cinepolis multiplex is a short drive away in neighbouring Aundh.

Baner falls under Pune Municipal Corporation (ward 9) and was included in the Aundh-Baner-Balewadi Smart Cities Mission redevelopment zone. PMC's FY2025-26 budget of Rs 12,618 crore prioritises roads, metro-linked works and water-metering upgrades, and the civic body has been widening choke points on Baner-Sus Road.

However, rapid vertical growth has strained civic services, with several societies reporting groundwater depletion and reliance on private water tankers.
